Off-topic questions about ending of Final Fantasy

Sorry, this is completely off-topic, but I can't help asking since I just watched Final Fantasy. I really didn't understand the ending all too well, maybe someone can help clear it up? :) When the Zeus Cannon was fired the final time, was the Earth Gaia destroyed? It seemed to me that at the very least it was hit and right afterwards there was an explosion. And then those blue things floating in the air at the end... (If the Earth Gaia was destroyed, wouldn't that also mean the end of life?) Was New New York the only protected city left? Or were there other cities? Because New New York was completely destroyed, so if it was the only one that would really stink for humanity.

hehe.. well, i dont think anyone understod the ending to well :P I guess gaia survived since you can see that hawk flying in the end. I alwyas thougt the the "earth gaia" and the "Alien Gaia" merged though.

I always thought the blue floaters were either pieces of the alien gaia or the alien spirits, either way the alien gaia was destroyed. The Earth Gaia survived because the final waveform was finally completed through Aki Ross somehow (was she pregnant?) and this waveform was able to cancel out the alien gaia. As for other cities remember that when Hein let the phantoms into New New York the other council members were able to escape to Houston. Also Hein's family was killed in an attack in San Francisco so until recently that was also protected city. There are probably more.
