After I installed 3.63, I noticed some tiny little icons in front of the file names on some tracks... if I click on the icon it disappears. They're really cute, I think I like them. :-) Um, what do they actually do? Thanks, Your local village idiot (what, me worry?)

You mean the little text and mute icons, etc.? Those have been there since before music was invented and just give you the flexibility to comment on individual items or adjust their status, etc. Beyond that...I am clueless about what you mean. Were these icons not there in Reaper 3.62 or earlier?

Have a look at Options/Preferences/Appearance/Media, under "Media item icons". By default, muted items will show the mute icon, but if you unmute the item the icon will go away, etc. (The icons have been around since Reaper 3.0.)

Those little guys mean the items are grouped. When you click the icon, you are removing that item from the group. You might have grouped them accidentally, or some actions (like importing REX files) can create grouped items.

So we all agree then - it's Reapers fault? ;) Glad you're all fixed up.
