Maddog Easy - and yes I have done it - if you insert a reasonably sized screwdriver under the outer cover at the outermost corner, and leaver upwards/twist then it just pops off. (rather in the same way as a BMW bike mirror cover does if you are into bikes too.) It's the shape that holds them onto their mounting - you'll see when you do this, and they go back on by a little bit of pressure over the mounting lugs. Happy spraying! Bhowani

cant say i've done this to the volvo but i have removed them for another car (astra mk4) and you could just unclip it using your nails (to avoid screwdriver marks) there were just clips all around

Easiest way I have found is to catch it on the garage door frame when reversing into the garage. Comes off dead easy! Gary

Yup - dead easy - a gentle push down on the top and get your finger nail underneath the cover - it comes off fairly easy - your idea of respraying has got me thinking to do mine - as there a couple of sractches and dinks where I clashed with a Jag's door mirror last year! Happy spraying!

Whatever you do, never use a screwdriver. That only causes unnecessary scratch- and dent-risk. Use a nylon tool which is much less likely to cause any damage, and also very useful for taking the inside trim apart. It might be easiest to drive by your dealer and ask for a weatherstrip-tool. The cover is clipped on, see the photo below for the locations of the hooks. Taking the entire mirror of is quite easy to do, but the cover isn't that hard to get off either. Start near the left of the picture and work your way around the bottom to unclip the hooks. Just take your time and you'll be fine.
