1.Insert new track 2.Right Click automation icon choose for instance "volume" 3.Envelope for volume comes up. Draw some stuff 4.Set Global automation "Read(Play faders with armed envelopes" in transport panel 5.Test if envelope does what you meant it to do 6.Go to "X" icon in envelope panel and chose "Hide envelope" 7.Test again. If hidden, with Global Automation override mode on the envelope will have no effect. Is this by design or a bug? Thanks.
Ok, edited first post for your reading pleasure... So... Is this intended behaviour? Can anyone shed some light here please? Because I'm not getting this thing. Do you have to have visible envelope lanes/envelopes over waveform so that Global Automation Read works? Does hiding an envelope means it's bypassed? I don't get it...Explain please. Thanks.

Here the automation still works after it's hidden. I can hear the volume changes ( or whatever envelope I tried). What seems to be wrong is that the fader doesn't move and I can trim it, as if the automation is set to trim mode. The button still shows "read", but the fader behaves like in "trim mode". This is for sure not intended behaviour, as we have to be very careful not to accidentally move a fader when it's automation is hidden.
Like gofer said, the envelope is still active (it affects the playback the way it is supposed to), it's just not updating the track fader on the screen the way it should. I'll look at it.

OK I looked at it. Reaper doesn't ever update fader drawing when an envelope is hidden, in any automation mode (this is related to the fact that hidden envelopes are not allowed to be armed). You could argue that the fader drawing should be updated any time the envelope is active, or you could argue that if you go to the trouble to hide the envelope without clearing it, that means you are done with the envelope for now and you don't want to think about it any more (even though it's still affecting the sound, you are closing the "gui", as if you were closing an FX window). I'd probably lean toward wanting it to draw, but it's not clear cut enough to make this an obvious bug fix.
Hi, Schwa. Thanks for the prompt answer. I checked my project again and the thing was the automation curve was not very noticeable since I had the monitors real low and I got the idea they were not affecting the sound. When I looked at the mixer and saw the faders not moving in Global Read mode I guess I sorta jumped the gun...Anyway, you're right if it's hidden in the TCP and since it does affect the sound as intended then that's not a real problem, at least in the TCP.However, in the MCP it might be good to have the faders reflect the automation, 'cos right now they just stay dead. No biggie for me though, but I had already gone through the manual and could not explain this behaviour. Thanks again.
Tell me I'm going mad - but if the envelope is hidden, isn't the slider hidden too? PS Hidden should mean just that -the envelope is still applied to the track or FX parameter
