V70 handbrake doesn't lock the wheels properly!

Hello all, New shape V70 has combo brake disc/drum on the rear for main brakes/handbrake respectively. Having jacked the car up & wheel off for another job, noticed that the whole disc/drum assembly rotates maybe ~ 5 degrees before coming to a definate stop with a clunk. Checked the handbrake - on OK. It does the same thing both sides, and rotating both assembly in either direction. Is it supposed to do this? A little disconcerting! Chris

Guess this is your first 'big' car, it's not just Volvos they all do it.

OK fair enough, all the big cars I've had, which is a fair number and fair cross section, with all round discs and that type of handbrake have done it :)

I don't know if Volvo recommend it or not but occasionally using the handbrake to slow the car will clean the road muck off and help keep the handbrake in good working order. If you haven't done this before advise trying out on a quiet, straight backroad at low speed, not something to attempt in the outside lane of a motorway. Gently apply the handbrake until you can feel it slowing the car. Only needs doing occasionally depending on what type of roads you drive on/how much dirt your car is exposed to. DO NOT PULL THE LEVER UP AS THOUGH APPLYING THE HANDBRAKE WHEN PARKING OR YOU'LL MAKE AN S60/V70 SHAPE HOLE IN THE HEDGE WHERE YOU LEAVE THE ROAD. :hissyfit:
