I just try to get started with this Reaper v3.102 I have A) a pc with Reaper installed. B) a MIDI keyboard - Hohner C) a sound modul - Roland SC55 SoundCanvas D) A MIDI cable Prodipe MIDI-USB 1i1o D is connected to B, C and A and I can load a media file and see C is processing data and I can hear the music - then I conclude the HW-setup is OK. I will then try to just press on the keyboard and hear the tunes I'm pressing - I do exactly this: 1) press NEW PROJECT button - to empty the screen 2) right click in tracks column and choose "INSERT NEW TRACK" or CTRL T 3) press the R-button and the "track" expande so I can see some 4) press the down-arrow at the end of the flickering VU-meter and choose "MIDI input", "USB MIDI Cable" and "ALL CHANNELS" 5) press the keyboard and I can see VU-meter is chancing but can't hear anything 6) press the speaker-button till it turns green - still no sound 7) press the IO-button in the upper part of the track and choose "USB MIDI Cable" in the "MIDI Hardware output"-combobox And ONLY SOMETIMES I can hear the tunes I'm pressing at the keyboard - and then as a piano. I think it has to do with my trying to change the piano to another instrument - then I think I bring Reaper, the pc, the sound modul or keyboard in some stange state that I can't hear anything. If I insert a MIDI-file and play it, starts a new project - then procedure 1) .. 7) works fine again What am I doing wrong ??????
I have no experience with the sound canvas, but I've had similar problems w other synths in the past. If I remeber correctly those have alway been caused by wrong settings on the synth. Sorry I cant help you more than that. Hopefully someone else'll pop by this thread soon. Held og lykke :)
ksor re what am i doing wrong. i can only conjecture. firstly on the sound canvas really undrstand how midi receive channels work. and setting up patches etc. heres a common new midi user problem. you record midi data on a midi trak eg bass... but you cant hear bass on the sound canvas. the answer is simple. bass is normally on midi channel 3. so check on the recorded midi trak that its set to transmit on 3, and in the canvas make sure the bass patch is set to receive on midi channel 3. really its best that you get a good midi book explaining all things midi. another example... you have midi drums on a reaper trak. but you cant hear drums on the canvas. make sure the drum trak is set to transmit on 10, and the canvas drums patch to receive on 10. A RULE... MIDI CHANNEL RECEIVE = MIDI CHANNEL SEND. hth
Yeah - AudioWonderland and Mr. Data ... you'r right, I was a little nasty there, sorry, but ... witch channel you normaly use for bass or drums has nothing whatsoever to do with my little test - I hope we can agree on that. Yes, I have read the manual on how to add a track and I think I'm aware of what I do when I do it - but one can never know, when it's "the first try". I think it should be a very simple thing to "just try to play some tunes on the keyboard and be able to hear them" - I'm not recording anything - just plain and simple - testing the HW and SW setup. I have a very, very, VERY simple MIDI-sequencer program - Target - where I did the same "first-try-test" without any problems - so I don't know why Reaper is so hard to set up for so simple a thing.
Which midi-in on the Soundcanvas is you cable plugged into? If it is in the front (midi-in2) - change it to the back (midi-in1). Second thoughts:- you probably need a patch cable (ordinary midi cable) from keyboard to SC in, and then use your usb cable to SC midi-in AND SC midi out. Edit: And experiment with a couple of midi patch cables. On the SC,midi-in1,midi-in2,and midi thru are NOT all the same things. On my setup I have keyboard->midi cable->SC midi-in1 - Soundcard out->SC midi-in2 and SC thru->Souncard in.In your case,if you replace where I say "soundcard" with USB,it should work (I think)

ksor people are trying to help you mate. on the hohner tell me this. what midi channel are you transmitting on ?? to the pc ?? on the canvas how do you have your sound patches set up in regard to midi channels ?? i posted the info up thread cos its a typical problem people have. ie setting patches and midi channels on a midi module correctly.
