I'm using DVD Maestro to author a DVD. I have three titles, each with a single audio track and subtitle track. The subtitles were created with SubRip as bitmaps and imported as a .son file. On my menu, I left the bit about selecting audio/angle/subtitle streams unchecked (as I want no subtitles selected by default), however when I choose a title to play from the menu, my single subtitle stream is on by default. In WinDVD, the subtitle menu says "Disabled". On my standalone, it recognizes that a subtitle stream is being used. On the standalone, I can disable the subtitles normally, however in WinDVD I have to first select my subtitle stream (the one that is, in fact, already playing) and then disable the subtitles in order to get rid of them. Either solution is unacceptable, as I want no subtitles at all. I saw some information in the forums (by searching) on setting a stream by default using commands, however I can't find information on setting "no subtitles" by default, and I find it hard to believe that it actually requires a command sequence to have a default of no subtitles! Any advice would be appreciated.
You know at the left where it lists the project title, then all your menus and movies on that tree branch sort of diagram? Right click on the very top one, the project name (I think it has a disc picture next to it) and choose Properties, and there you can set defaults for audio, subs, etc.
Thanks, finding that does answer the more general question of how to set an initial stream, however I'm still getting those subtitles on by default. I set Initial Stream Settings->Subtitle to Off and reauthored. Interestingly, I tried the original test disc in a third player and it worked as I wanted--this was without explicitly setting subtitles to Off in the DVD Maestro project. So WinDVD and my Sampo display the subs automatically, and an Apex has no subs by default. I haven't made a test disc using your suggestions (just an image run through WinDVD) since WinDVD displayed the same problem. Any more ideas?
I've found that WinDVD (or maybe it's powerdvd, but I don't think so), has displayed subs even when they are set to off by default on the DVD. I think this might have something to do with enabling subs on a previous DVD that has been played. Anyway, the point is I wouldn't trust a software DVD player in relation to this. I've authored lots of DVDs in Maestro and have never set the initial stream to off. Never had a problem with my standalone. It sounds like a DVD player setting. I imagine this is why the "off" option exists in Maestro, in order to override any setting on the DVD player that displays subs by default.
Ah, thanks! At that thought, I went ahead and burned the DVD I authored, and it played as expected in the standalones. Kinda bugs me that WinDVD overrides the DVD--I'd prefer a more compliant player so that I can actually test these things. Ah well, thanks for the help, guys!

I have found daikin dvd informer to be bery realistic, and it also lets you debug the ifo commands through step by step and observe all the registers as the dvd plays. Lets me see exactly what is happening with the stream settings and such. The only problem it has is when a dvd folder is missing a file such as video_ts.vob or vts_01_0.vob. The work around is to create a 0 byte file with the same name as the missing file, then the player works normally.
