On the later 850's without the self diagnosis code reader under the bonnet but with the obdII port on the dash, i understand it is necessary to buy a code reader or visit volvo to get the codes cleared. would removing the ecu unit for any length of time clear the codes or is there an internal power supply like a motherboard battery in the ecu which stores the codes ragardless??. i ask because some codes need to be cleared even after fixing the problem and my nearest dealer is 50 miles away.

removing the ECU clears the codes. Never come across a car with both the socket and the diagnostics port under the bonnet though!

Thanks tom....i thought the older 850's without obdII had some sort of fly lead wire type affair that enabled you to read/reset the codes...but ive never had that model so not sure.

I too have had similar problems, ordered a U480 reader from USA but it cannot read the morse code type protocol on my 850, I plan to build one if I can get the curcuit diagram (had a link to one but the site has gone) also I need to think about taking ECU out overnight to clear codes but cannot confirm or find its location in the car, can anybody help?

the ecu is located on the front left hand side of the engine bay as you look at it, you can just unplug your battery and leave it off overnight if you have your radio code, this will put your ecu back to its factory settings, regards cavey
