Loving reaper so far.. But one of the things I can't get my fat head around is how the multitake/items thing works. For instance.. Say I record an acoustic guitar part for 3 minutes on a track, then decide I don't like it, and rerecord it, but play it longer.. For 4 minutes. The second take which is 4 minutes long, gets split at the 3 minute spot. And then I get the first part which is take 2/2 and the second region is take 1/1....And I can actually hear an audible blip where it the split happens, and it wants me to crossfade there and etc. I don't get it. It's totally confusing to me, I don't even know what take I'm hearing or how to make them into one region without a break. I must be doing something wrong, right? In pro-tools I just destructively record like a tape machine and it doesn't split recorded tracks up into weird regions of takes. I really will be just happy to ditch this multitake stuff and record destructively, or at least have my recordings be one proper full region. Any help is appreciated.

vb. i dont do it like that. i keep it simple cos i'm a simple bloke.lol. eg voc takes or acoustic takes whatever. i create a folder called acoustic geetar. then i just indent takes on their own traks within folder labelled take 1 thru take xx.. on seperate traks within the folder. then i cut out the bits i dont like and assemble to a free trak left blank in the folder (lets say last trak a free trak.) that i label final. by dragging vertically down to the free trak the bits i like.

Under options/preferences/project/defaults you can set the fade length to 0:00:00, this will get rid of the auto cross fades. Now if you do two takes it will still split at the 3 min mark but you have a couple of options. First, the track that is highlighted is the one that is playing. So for example highlight the first part of the first take, and the second part of the second take and as it plays it will switch when it gets to the split. You can also slide the split part as you would edit any single take. Once you get use to this it is actually really nice as you can do several takes and select the very best part of each. If you really don't want part of a take, highlight that part of the take, right click, choose Take/Delete active take and it will remove it. Finally if you know for sure that you really biffed a take and just want to retake, highlight the take and hit delete before you re-record. Hope this helps.

Joe...to keep it simple. DELETE THE TAKE before you record onto the same track. Just touch it with your cursor and hit the "delete" key on your keyboard. Then it's gone!!!

Thanks for the replies guys. I really wanted to find a way to just destructively record, but I guess the undo/delete take feature will work also. It's just a matter of getting used to it. I'll play around with that file clean-up too. Another quickie question is about templates. I got a rocking drum sound with 7 tracks and a bunch of plug-ins and mixed them up nice......and saved the session as a template. But when I load the template in a new session, it loads in all those drum audio regions and crap that I definately don't want. Is there a way to make a true session template with no audio files associated? Just the session/mixer info, but an empty/clear edit window.. No audio?
