I believe a few others have experienced the following problem too, but still haven't seen any words from Digidesign. Problem: - Upon restart, launched PT-LE first... worked fine..... then quit, Apple CD Player will not work, no sound thru Digi001, no sound thru computer's internal speaker / sound output, Apple CD Player will not even play the CD. (TIME not moving at all)........ or - Upon restart, launched Apple CD Player......worked find thru computer's internal speaker / sound output, but not thru Digi001... Quit....... then Launched PT-LE will fail to initialize with message something like "... Protools hardware not installed or being used by other application..." Looks like: - Digidesign Output Driver extension (V1.4 is the one I have) is not competible with Sound Manager (OS9). When I disabled the above extension (leave the rest of PT extension on), PT-LE worked fine with Digi001, and Apple CD Player worked fine with computer internal speaker / sound output. System setup: - B&W G3/400, 256MB Ram (assigned 60MB to PT-LE, 50MB to DAE) - Digi001, ProTools LE V5 - Sound Control Panel -> Output set to Digidesign interface (pretty clean system, installed only PT-LE, Final Cut Pro and After Effect; no Internet, network or "Office" type of stuff) This Digi001 work greats, I'm using it as a "Pre-Production" system before the projects handing over to one of our 2 studios with PT Mix Plus system. But having to restart the system everytime is really annoying. Any suggestion are welcome from anyone, and definately hope to hear from Digidesign soon. Thanks Simon

I got a response form Digi saying that the audio goes through an audio cable to the motherboard and bypasses the Sound Manager. This is not true anymore ! I disconnected the audio cable and still get sound. Under Mac OS 9 and newer Macs (at least G3 on) the sound goes digitally through the Sound Manager. I have been working this problem for the past few weeks. I really need the CD and DVD audio to go out the Digi 001. I'm leaning toward thinking that Digi's output driver might be OK and it's Apple's problem. I downloaded another CD player called Retro CD 1.5. This will Play CD's fine through the Digi 001. This leads me to believe that the Apple CD Audio Player just doesn't use the Sound Manager. I have not been able to check playing the audio of a DVD because I cannot find another DVD player other than Apple's.
THIS IT NOT TRUE ! With a newer Mac (G3 B&W) and Mac OS 9 at least. I can prove this two ways. 1) With a CD playing I can unplug the audio cable from the CD-ROM to the motherboard. The CD will keep playing. The only other connection is power and IDE so the audio must be going in digitaly over the IDE bus. 2) I found a program called Retro CD. It will play the CD through Sound Manager and through the Digi 001. #2 makes me beleive that it's Apple's CD player and DVD player that don't use Sound Manager but I'm not sure. I also have not found another software VD player to test a DVD through the Digi 001. Right now I'm not sure if this is Digi's fault or Apple's fault. Digi may need to make an update for the current Sound Manager and Mac OS 9 or Apple needs to make it's DVD player and CD player work with the Sound Manager. In any case, don't let them tell you that the audio is routed via a different path because I have proof that this can work. Digi ??
Thanks for everyone's input here, Jeff (Cohen), I read an article about a month ago (Macworld Chinese edition!!!) sayting that this has been changed with OS9 and new machines (starting from B&W G3.... I think). And according an earlier post by Jeff Zacharias.... " I got a response form Digi saying that the audio goes through an audio cable to the motherboard and bypasses the Sound Manager......" ...... this makes me feel that the Digi guys are not aware of the above!!?? I'll try the Retro CD on my machine and see if it works.
I found this tech note from Apple. It clearly states that in Mac OS 9 the audio is taken digitally from the CD/DVD drive. You can read about it at: And no, it doesn't seem like the Digi people who have responded know about this. I would really like them to tell us if the Digi Output Drivers will work with CD/DVD.
