I have been using Reaper but just got a new (second hand) computer. The computer just had the hard drive cleaned and windows reinstalled. I'm using an Alesis Multimix USB 2.0 interface. On my first project since downloading Reaper again, I imported some wav files. The "building peaks window" comes up and you can see the peaks. When it goes to the next track the last peaks disappear. It cycles through the progression (track1,2,...) a few times then the window closes but no peaks are visible. There is sound but I can't see it. There is a lock on the corner of each track. Never saw those before but not sure if it's pertinent.

The locks are for editing(or not) So you can't see the peaks but there is sound coming thru? Weird? Try to solo that track and make sure the sound IS coming from that naked track. Maybe open up a "new' instance and importing just the missing track. BArdo

I tried soloing each track...sound but no peaks. When I import one wav, the building peaks window comes up and it does show the peaks but as soon as the window goes away, so do the peaks. Import the next wav, the window comes up and starts building the 1st wav again. You see it as its being built but as soon as it starts to build the second, the first one disappears. As soon as it's done with the second, that one disappears. This continues for each imported wav?!?!?!? After my first post I tried recording some fresh tracks. Everything works fine with those. Peaks are present

Which Reaper version are you using? What is your OS? Vista? Or are you running XP with a non-administrator account? I ask because maybe Reaper doesn't have the access permission to the folder (but then the import shouldn't work as well - unless you have assigned an alternative peak file folder in Preferences->Media which has no access rights). Also try playing with the options in Preferences->Appearance->Media, maybe your video card doesn't like antialiased drawing or something along these lines. TBH, I'm completely clueless... :(

Thanks for the help. Basically after trying a number of things, I recopied the wavs to the flash drive and now everything works. Something must have been corrupted the first time I tried. Thanks again.
